Water starved residents urged to register to vote

Register to vote...a poster from the Independent Electoral Commission mounted on a water tank along a busy road in Mathibestad, urges citizens to register to vote during the 2024 Elections Voter Registration Weekend on November 18-19. Mathibestad under the Moretele Local Municipality in North West province is one of the many areas across South Africa experiencing chronic water shortages caused by ageing infrastructure, poor governance and corruption. Residents rely on independent water merchants, natural sources such as wells, streams and an erratic trucking delivery of the precious resource by the local municipality. Water supply issues are set to take centre stage in the run up to South Africa's 2024 general election. Photo: Lucas Ledwaga
