Limpopo province’s vaccination programme has been widely acclaimed as one of the most successful in the country. The provincial government has pointed out some of the reasons behind the programme’s success. These include taking digital registration door to door, working with local leadership and a people-centred approach.
According to the World Health Organisation’s Covid-19 barometer, “as of 6:19pm CEST, 27 September 2021, there were 231,703,120 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 4,746,620 deaths, reported to WHO. As of 27 September 2021, a total of 5,924,819,985 vaccine doses have been administered.”
On Heritage Day health workers set up a makeshift vaccination station at Ga-Matamanyane village in Moletjie. This was part of a joint operation with the Moletjie Traditional Council which was hosting the annual Heritage Day celebrations at Moshubaba.
The department of health in the province has partnered with church leaders, traditional leaders, sports personalities and community leaders to roll out the programme. But health MEC Phophi Ramathuba has warned the public not to be complacent.
“Our province is now out of the 3rd wave and we are reminding people not be complacent and drop the ball. Scientists have already predicted the 4th wave. We therefore call upon the 18 year old and above to seize the opportunity and visit our approved vaccination sites to be vaccinated. If we all get vaccinated we can beat the 4th wave. It’s important to continue to encourage vaccine-hesitant friends and family about the need for everyone to get vaccinated so we can end the pandemic. Vaccines save lives,” said Ramathuba.
Lucas Ledwaba took pictures of the vaccination process on the sidelines of the Heritage Day celebrations where traditional dance groups entertained the scores of people who attended.
